Suzhou, formerly romanized as Soochow, is a major city located in southeastern Jiangsu Province of East China, about 100 km (62 mi) northwest of Shanghai. It is a major economic center and focal point of trade and commerce, and the second largest city in the province, after its capital Nanjing. The city is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the shores of Lake Tai and belongs to the Yangtze River Delta region.
Humble Administrator Garden, located in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, was founded in the early years of Ming Zhengde (early 16th century) and is a representative work of Jiangnan classical gardens. Humble Administrator Garden is known as the four famous gardens of China together with Beijing Summer Palace, Chengde Mountain Resort and Lingering Garden.
Humble Administrator Garden is located in the northeast of Suzhou City (178 Northeast Street). As of 2014, it is still the largest classical garden in Suzhou, covering an area of 78 acres (about 5.2 hectares). The whole park is centered by water, surrounded by mountains and rivers. The halls are exquisite, the flowers and trees are lush, and it has the characteristics of Jiangnan town. The garden is divided into three parts: east, middle and west. The east garden is wide and sloppy. The middle garden is the essence of the whole garden. The west garden is beautifully constructed. Everyone has its own characteristics.
Zhouzhuang Town is the world's cultural heritage pre-selected place, the first batch of national 5A-level tourist attractions, located in the southeast of Suzhou City, at the junction of Kunshan, Wujiang and Shanghai.
Zhouzhuang Town is surrounded by water, street lays along the river to form the city. The well-shaped river course preserves 14 ancient stone bridges built in Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. More than 800 aboriginal people live along the river, and more than 60% of the houses still retain the architectural style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The main attractions of Zhouzhuang Town include Fu'an Bridge, Shuangqiao and Shen Hall.
Huqiu Scenic Area is located in the northwest corner of Suzhou Ancient City. It has a long history of more than 2,500 years. It has the reputation of “the first place in Wuzhong” and “the first mountain in Wuzhong”. The Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo wrote reputed words for myriad years “go to Gusu does not go to Hu Qiu, not to pay attention to Lu Qiu, is a matter of no consequence.” It has been rated as the first batch of the top ten civilized scenic tourist area demonstration points in the country, the national 5A level tourist scenic spot, and the national civilized unit.
Yushan, located in Changshu City, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is known as Wumu Mountain. It is located in the northwest of Changshu City, north of the Yangtze River, and south of Shanghu. It is a national 4A-level tourist scenic spot. Yushan was named after Yu Zhong (Zhong Yong), the ancestor of Jiangnan, who died in the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The southeastern part of Yushan Mountain extends into the ancient city, so it has the reputation of “ten miles castle peak half into the city”. Yushan Mountain is divided into two parts: Yushan Park and Yushan National Forest Park. Yushan Park is located in the east of the mountain, on the north gate street, with the ancient city wall as the boundary, which is part of the Changshu Liangshan project.
Shajiabang Reed Scenic Area is one of the national patriotism education demonstration bases, one of the hundred national red tourism classic scenic spots, the national 5A-level tourist area, and one of the largest ecological wetlands in East China. The area covers more than 1,000 mu and the scenic area covers more than 6,000 mu. It has unique historical humanities and natural ecological resources.
Tongli Ancient Town belongs to Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and founded in Song Dynasty. In the town, there are many gardens, temples, houses, and celebrities which are built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The 15 rivers in the shape of “Chuan” divide the ancient town into seven small islands, and the 49 ancient bridges connect them known as "small bridge, flowing water, and people".
Jinji Lake is located in the northeast of the old city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, in the middle of Suzhou Industrial Park, and adjacent to Dushu Lake in the south. The center is located at 31°18′ north latitude, 120°42′ east longitude, and the water area is 7.4 square kilometers.
Jinji Lake is a tributary of Taihu Lake. There are more than 10 inlets and outlets. In the north, it gets the Loujiang River, in the west, the waters are mainly from the Xiangmentang and the Qimentang. The effluent mainly flows into the Wusong River through the Xietang River, so it belongs to the Wusong River system. In Jinji Lake, there are musical fountains, water ferris wheel, Ligong dike, Taohua Island, Jinji Lake Bridge waterfall and other attractions.
On July 2, 2012, Jinji Lake was rated as a national 5A-level tourist scenic spot by the National Tourism Administration, and became the only scenic spot in the country with commercial tourism characteristics.
Suzhou-style moon cake is the traditional food of China Mid-Autumn Festival. It originated from Suzhou and is Suzhou-style cakes. It is loved by the people of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs are produced in Yangcheng Lake, Suzhou. The crab body does not stick to the mud, commonly known as the clear water hairy crab, it has fat body, green shell, white belly, golden claw, yellow hair, and fleshy cream. Female crabs in September and male crabs in October have the best gonad development. Cooked and condensed, the female is golden yellow, and the male is like white jade, which tastes delicious.
Prunus persica is produced in Fenghuang, Zhangjiagang, Suzhou. Prunus persica is an excellent variety that has been selected for a long-term based on the introduction of Wuxi Peach in 1952. The skin color is light yellow, milky white, or reddish, it characterized by big, soft, fresh, sweet, juicy, easy peeling. Prunus persica has white phoenix, white flower, yellow skin, small green and other main varieties, which are exported to Suzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and other places.
Biluochun is a traditional Chinese tea, one of China's top ten famous tea. It belongs to green tea and has a history of more than 1,000 years. Biluochun is produced in the east Dongting Mountain and West Dongting Mountain (now Wuzhong District) in Taihu Lake, Wu, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, so it is also called as “Dongting Biluochun”.
It was listed as a tribute in the Tang Dynasty, the ancients also called Biluochun as "Kung Fu Tea" and "New Blood Tea”. The tea buds of high-grade Biluochun is so delicate that 0.5 kg dry tea requires 6-7 thousand tea buds. After the frying, the dried tea sticks are tightly knotted, the white is revealed, the color is silvery green, the green is seductive, and the curl is turned into a snail. Suzhou embroidery is one of China's outstanding national traditional crafts. It is the general name for embroidery products in Suzhou. Its birthplace is in Wuxian, Suzhou, and has been widely distributed in Wuxi and Changzhou. Embroidery and sericulture, can not be separated, so embroidery, also known as silk embroidery. In the Qing Dynasty, "Su embroidery, Xiang embroidery, Yue embroidery, embroidery" was established as the four famous embroideries in China. The Qing Dynasty was the heyday of Suzhou embroidery, and it was really a genre and a famous show. Suzhou embroidery has a unique style, ingenious design, meticulous work, lively and elegant color, and local characteristics.
Local traditional musical instruments are known as “four su” of Suzhou flute, Su Sheng, Su Xiao and Su Gong. Among them, the flute is the representative one, named after the accompaniment of Kunqu, and also the special flute of the Suxi Beach Spring. The traditional bamboo flute with D-tone, takes high-quality round bamboo as the main material, the flute body has horizontal tie and paint, fine workmanship, sweet sound, and playing freely, is one of the essential instruments in Jiangnan silk bamboo music.
Among the arts and crafts in Suzhou, the finest and smallest is the micro-carving. Micro-carving uses the extremely sharp triangular knives to engrave very fine paintings, figures or poems on bamboo, ivory, and even hair. The smaller the work, the more precious it is.
